C'était pas non plus le paradis Oh yeah, too bad Eh ouais, tant pis In his old, threadbare overcoat Dans son vieux pardessus râpé For years he took Il a pris, pendant des années The same commuter bus Le même autobus de banlieue My old man Mon vieux In the evening, coming home from work Le soir, en rentrant du boulot He sat without saying a word Il s'asseyait sans dire un mot He was the silent type Il était du genre silencieux My old man Mon vieux Sundays were monotonous Les dimanches étaient monotones We never received anyone On ne recevait jamais personne It didn't make him unhappy Ça ne le rendait pas malheureux I think so, old man Je crois, mon vieux In his old, threadbare overcoat Dans son vieux pardessus râpé On paydays, when he came home Les jours de paye, quand il rentrait We heard him yell a little On l'entendait gueuler un peu My old man Mon vieux We knew the song Nous, on connaissait la chanson Everything went, bourgeois, boss Tout y passait, bourgeois, patron The left, the right, even the Good Lord La gauche, la droite, même le Bon Dieu With my old man Avec mon vieux In our house, there was no TV Chez nous, y'avait pas la télé It was outside that I was going to look C'est dehors que j'allais chercher For a few hours the escape Pendant quelques heures l'évasion I know, it's stupid Je sais, c'est con To think that I spent years Dire que j'ai passé des années Next to him, without looking at him À côté de lui, sans le regarder We barely opened our eyes On a à peine ouvert les yeux The two of us Nous deux I could have, it wasn't smart J'aurais pu, c'était pas malin Go a long way with him Faire avec lui un bout de chemin Maybe it would have made him happy Ça l'aurait peut-être rendu heureux My old man Mon vieux But when you're just fifteen Mais quand on a juste quinze ans We don't have hearts big enough On n'a pas le cœur assez grand To accommodate all these things Pour y loger toutes ces choses-là You see Tu vois Now that he's far away Maintenant qu'il est loin d'ici Thinking about all this, I say to myself En pensant à tout ça, je me dis I wish he was near me J'aimerai bien qu'il soit près de moi Dad Papa
