Hey there, I'm Gretchen Coley with The Coley Group and in today's episode of Discover the Triangle we are taking a ride about 30 miles outside of Raleigh and heading to a quaint charming downtown. It's one of the oldest in Johnston County and it's where Ava Gardner used to call home. Let's go to explore downtown Smithfield. As residents flee the cities and flock to the suburbs. This suburb is no different. Founded in 1777 Smithfield is one of the oldest towns in Johnston County and nestled beside the Neuse River. It lends itself to a backdrop that is unlike anything else you're going to find in this area. This quaint and charming downtown is surrounded by four local churches and some great local businesses. The smell of barbecue fills the streets and it's one of the things that Smithfield is known for. And with restaurants like SoDoSoPa, Simple Twist, The Gilded Pear and Gotham Deli. I can promise you that you will never go hungry. You're not far from a number of things that you would love to do including the one and only Ava Gardner Museum. Get a quick history lesson at the Johnston County Heritage Center or take in the splendor of nature at the Arboretum. You're going to find a wonderful social scene with people who are friendly and down-to-earth and I can promise you that there is no pretentiousness allowed. Connecting with nature is a beautiful thing in Smithfield. You can start right here in downtown with easy access to the Buffalo Creek Greenway. On any given day you'll find the path filled with happy residents walking biking and hiking. Its paved trail meanders almost three miles along the Neuse River. And if you feel it adventurous this trail connects to the North Carolina Greenway that runs from Manteo to Murphy. That should keep you busy for a while. We can't not talk about the Parks and Recreation Department in Smithfield that gives residents activities for all ages all year around. Step into the Smithfield Recreation Aquatic Center for indoor and outdoor pool facilities, a splash pad, pickup game of basketball or walk the indoor track on a rainy day. You can even take in a workout at the state-of-the-art facility. I can assure you there is something for everyone here. The Smithfield Community Park is right across the street where you can take in a little league game or some Saturday soccer with the kids. With parks, playgrounds, tennis courts, and even pickleball it's easy to see why residents spend so much time here. And you can't visit Smithfield without a visit to Carolina Premium Outlets. You'll find shopping, dining and entertainment options as well as a lot of Raleigh folks driving here to take advantage of the great shopping. For the wine enthusiast Hinnant Family Vineyards are a perfect for a tasting of some of the area's favorite local wines. Make an afternoon of it and take a Vineyard tour and get a great look into North Carolina wines. It's easy to see why Smithfield has become the destination for families who want a small-town feel close to city conveniences. Raleigh is just up the road and it's all highway. In every way Smithfield is a great place to explore and call home.
