Access roads to Menikdena • Take Matale- Dambulla road up to panampitiya junction near Naula town. Then go along Thalkiriyagama road about 2.5km up to the Buddha statue by the side of the road. There turn to the left and go ahead 1km about along the road. Then turn to the left and go up to Menikdena archeological site.• Go along Kurunegala – Dambulla road up to the Pahalawewa Junction.(Thalkiriyagama) Then turn to the right along panampitiya road about 5.5km and then turn to the right at the Buddha statue. Go about 1km ahead and turn left. That ends at the Archeological site. Menikdena archeological site is one of the most beautiful calm and quiet places worth visiting. It is a well restored Monastry of the pabbatha vihara complex architectural style. There are tall shady trees in the compound and garden around. Nearby is the village tank. The monastery is situated at the foot of the Menikdena hills. This is a very sacred place with a long history. Arahath maliyadewa is said to be the last monk who attained arahathood in sri lanka. When he passed away his body was placed in a beautiful gem studed coffin and buried there. The name Menikdena denotes the coffin decorated with gems. In 8,9 and 10 th century this place was known as buthgamu viharaya. During the king vijayabahu the first, the temple complex and area was used temporary as an army recruiting centre.  A large number of ruins were discovered during the excavation at the site. Bodhi tree shrine, Stupa, Image house, chapter house, congregation hall are some of the main buildings among the findings. There are few moonstones and guard stones too. Menikdena Archeological reserve consist of large number of trees, scrubs and also many species of birds and animals.
