Up (Prep/Adv/Adj) The word ‘up’ can be used as a preposition, an adverb and an adjective. As an adverb 1. ‘Up’ means ‘towards a higher position’. It may me in the field of value, number, level etc. Examples The level of water came up to the windows of my house. The smoke rose up from the factory. The prices of the essential commodities may go up during lockdown. He stood up and saw them coming. It will heat the room up in a minute. Don’t look up. 2. Go to a place He went up to the place She came up to meet me. As a preposition Here it carries the same meaning as an adverb. It means ‘towards a higher position’. He went up the hill. I could not run up the stairs. He is up the ladder.(at the top of) Water vapour rises up into the sky. As an adjective As an adjective, it is used in many ways: 1. For the meaning of awake I was up all night. (not in bed) I was up when he came. 2. It indicates the end of something. We also use ‘over’ for this. The time is up. The game is up. 3. It means ‘on’. If the lights, fans, computers are on, we use this word. The computer is up now. 4. Increased The income is up.(higher than before) The employment is not up. Upon Now-a-days, this word is rarely used. The word ‘upon’ is considered to be used in formal writing, but still some uses are mentioned below: 1. Upon =on It is used in place of ‘on’. There is no difference in the meaning of ‘on’ and ‘upon’ if these words are used to mean physical contact of one thing with another. Examples: She totally depends on her father. (Correct) She totally depends upon her father. (Correct) The apple is on the table. (Correct) The apple is upon the table. (Correct) 2. Immediately after something has happened: I got happy on/upon seeing my friends after so much time. 3. Upon = up + on Here this word indicates upward movement and then physical contact: He mounted upon the horse. He climbed upon the roof. The ant climbed upon my knee. No ‘on’ only ‘upon’ This is very important to note down that some places are there where only ‘upon’ is used. It can not be replaced by ‘on’. 1.
