Innovative surgery returns grandmother, amputee to outdoors

Eileen and Robert Ward’s house in Theodosia, Missouri, is the gathering spot for family they always dreamed of. It’s got access to wildlife, camping, recreation on Bull Shoals Lake, and plenty of other excuses for their kids and grandkids to visit. “It's my heart, it's my life to see them happy and glowing here with me,” Eileen said. But after a catastrophic motorcycle crash — Eileen and Robert hit a deer cresting a hill — Robert needed a month in the hospital to recover, and Eileen had emergency amputation on her right foot. She and Robert recovered, and though Eileen’s prosthetic leg worked well, nerve pain, PTSD, and reduced activity levels combined to make daily life very difficult for her. “I was gearing up to full-blown bad depression,” Eileen said. “Getting out of a car and getting out of bed were challenges. Every amputee might go through some of these phantom pains, but my pain turned out to be quite different. I found out that as the medication was getting higher and higher, my pain wasn't going any lower.” Thankfully, Eileen was not out of options. She was referred to Dr. Daniel London, an orthopedic surgeon and nerve specialist at MU Health Care’s Missouri Orthopedic Institute.
