It's that time of year again when the lakes are opening up here in the UK but the water is still cold. So, how do we motivate ourselves to take that first open water swim of the season? Here are eight ideas: 1) Focus on goals. What races do you have coming up? How soon are they? Uncomfortably close given you haven't been in the lake this year? The triathlon season comes around quickly! 2) Consider the health benefits of cold water swimming. It's good for us! Like lifting heavy weights or eating salad. 3) Remember that it’s a habituation process. The first swim is always going to feel cold and we have to go through that barrier regardless of when we start getting back in the water. 4) Get some accountability: maybe a coach, or a friend you agree to go swimming with, or maybe just book the session and use the possibility of losing your booking fee to get you out of the door. 5) Focus on the things you like about swimming. We often think about the negatives: how cold the water will be, and forget about the positives. But open water swimming is a fun and beautiful experience once we get in. 6) Bribe yourself with treats. Those extra calories burnt might be worth something, right? 7) Use mindfulness. Just book the session and forget about it. Each time the thought "the lake is going to be cold" comes up, recognise it and respond with "I'm not giving this worry any more thought". 8) Make it easy on yourself. Invest in things like gloves, booties, and a warm dry robe so the experience is more pleasant.
