The Norfolk and Western was one of the most successful railways in American history. Born in Virginia as the City Point Railroad, they paved a path to dominance that was realized in the 1900's. It was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its motto was "Precision Transportation"; it had a variety of nicknames, including "King Coal" and "British Railway of America".
