The Civic and Cultural Heart of Denver, Colorado 101 W. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80202 A century ago, Civic Center was created to be the civic and cultural heart of Denver. Located today at the crossroads of government, culture, commerce and community, Civic Center is a 12-acre urban oasis anchoring one of the grandest architectural campuses in America. As Denver's only National Historic Landmark, Civic Center is one of the most complete and intact City Beautiful-era designs remaining today. Civic Center Park's preservation is vital to Denver's historic footprint as well is its modern-day life; ensuring this fact is realized is the nonprofit Civic Center Conservancy, whose mission is to keep this essential public space active and thriving for all. The Conservancy helps bring to life the visions our founders had over 100 years ago. We hope you'll visit the heart of our city - Civic Center Park, where history meets the modern! The History of the Greek Amphitheatre ( 1919 ) Designed by Denver architects Marean & Norton in collaboration with Chicago architect Edward H. Bennet, the Greek Theatre was built to fulfill Bennett's vision of commemorating park benefactors and providing an open air theatre. Construction began in 1917 to create an open stage on a central pavilion in front of a sunken orchestra and theatre floor with seating for up to 1,200 spectators. The theatre is framed by a 210-foot semicircular Colonnade of Civic Benefactors, which has murals by local artist Allen Tupper True on its interior walls. True would be commissioned in later years to paint murals in the State Capitol Rotunda and the nearby Brown Palace Hotel lobby. Upon completion in 1919, the Greek Theatre began to host regular vaudeville performances, concerts and other entertainment. One hundred years later, the Civic Center Conservancy, as part of its Art in the Park program, brought a temporary public art display to the historic theatre. "A Narrative Landscape," created by local artist Theresa Clowes and pictured above, was a floating fabric installation that celebrated the centennial anniversary of the park. Learn more about the piece's creation and meaning from the artist here. Denver Probate Court The Denver Probate Court, sometimes referred to as the 24th Judicial District, encompasses all of the City and County of Denver. The Colorado Constitution Article VI § 9(3) created the Denver Probate Court and defines its jurisdiction. The Probate Court has exclusive jurisdiction over "all matters of probate, settlements of estates of deceased persons, appointment of guardians, conservators and administrators, and settlement of their accounts, the adjudication of the mentally ill, and such other jurisdiction as may be provided by law." The History of the Voorhies Memorial ( 1919 ) A successful miner, Denver resident John Hart Pemberton Voorhies left his fortune to fund a memorial gateway on the northern end of Civic Center. The Voorhies Memorial was completed in 1919, firmly positioning the Bates triangle as an integral park space and requiring that Colfax Avenue be re-routed around the park. Designed by noted Denver architects Fisher & Fisher, the Voorhies Memorial includes murals by local artist Allen Tupper True, who would be commissioned in later years to paint murals in the State Capitol Rotunda and the Brown Palace’s lobby. Voorhies' name is listed on the park's Colonnade of Civic Benefactors, which flanks the east and west edges of the Greek Amphitheatre. Most recently, the Voorhies Memorial was home to a temporary art display and candlelight vigil in honor of the 2020 World Day of Remembrance, which honors victims of traffic crashes and their families. The Capitol The Colorado State Capitol was constructed in the 1890s and opened in November 1894. It is located at 200 E. Colfax Ave. and is home of the Colorado General Assembly, and the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Treasurer. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, the building is intentionally reminiscent of the United States Capitol, constructed of Colorado white granite and topped with its distinctive gold dome. The dome itself is covered in copper panels that are gilded with gold leaf from a Colorado mine. The gold was first added in 1908 to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush.
