Good Day Farms, John Davis wants Louisiana Hemp regulated like medical cannabis.

What does the future hold for Louisiana’s THC-hemp market? By Chris Rosato Published: Jun. 7, 2024 at 5:46 PM CDT|Updated: Jun. 7, 2024 at 6:24 PM CDT BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - If signed by Governor Landry, HB952 by Rep. Dustin Miller would restrict THC-hemp products from being sold in gas stations and any restaurants without a permit by June 17th. It’s products like vapes and gummies that advertise like candy. The items will also be less potent - going from 8mg per serving to 5mg. State Sen. Thomas Pressly (R-Shreveport) had a bill to outlaw the products altogether but failed to get it across the finish line. But says he’ll be back next year. “I was more okay with the legislation as it came off the senate floor prior to it being put in conference. I was disappointed in the conference committee report for sure. We’ll certainly be back next session,” said Sen. Thomas Pressly on Friday. Pressly’s main concern was how easily accessible the products are to minors. But he and Rep. Miller worked to come up with a compromise that brings us to where we are now. However, Sen. Pressly says he’s still not happy, even voting no on the bill in the end. “I certainly was disappointed on that front. I ended up voting no on the bill. I could have lived with the initial compromise, but we certainly will be back next session,” Sen. Pressly continued. The state’s medical marijuana market is highly regulated with rules on where those products can be sold, who can buy them, how much they can buy, and how they need to be packaged. In the synthetic market, products like delta-8 and delta-9 infused edibles and drinks, are lab-created products that have little regulations tied to them. John Davis with Good Day Farm Louisiana, one of the nation’s largest medical marijuana manufacturers, says it was time the two markets were treated equally. “Before this bill, it was unlimited amounts of THC in the products, unlimited servings in the products, there are no labs that are testing in Louisiana, the products aren’t required to be made with Louisiana hemp, or even made in Louisiana. So, there are a lot of concerns about where are these products coming from, how are they being made, and where are they being tested,” Davis explained. Davis says because the products will still be able to be sold at truck stops and restaurants that obtain a permit before June 17th, he does not believe the market will take a hit. “Right now, they’re selling at over 2,000 retail locations in the state, essentially any place that has a cash register and can get a license. Even now there will be bars and restaurants permitted for on-premises consumption. So, from the outside looking in, and remember this is day 4 of the new law, it doesn’t appear that it’s going to impede that marketplace,” said Davis. As for Sen. Pressly’s plan for next year, he says it’s too early to say.
