1914. Romanian troops marched into the Carpathian Mountains and never came back the same. This is the Dracula Battalion Files - the sealed story of what happened when Romanian soldiers encountered Carpathian vampires in the Argeș Pass. The Dracula Battalion was a unit of Romanian troops assigned to hold a supply corridor in the Carpathian Mountains in October 1914. What began as a routine posting became thirty-one days of encounters with something the old Romanian folklore calls Strigoi - or more precisely, Moroi de munte: ancient Carpathian vampires that predate the villages, predate Romania itself. The Romanian troops documented bipedal tracks 38 centimeters long, a soldier found with puncture wounds on his neck, horses fleeing in terror, and multiple Carpathian entities conducting coordinated perimeter surveillance of the battalion. The Dracula Battalion files were sealed by the Romanian War Ministry for forty years. The 1914 account follows Romanian soldiers through thirty-one days in the Carpathian Mountains - from the first tracks, to the drained goat carcass, to the night a towering Strigoi entered the battalion camp and looked directly at the surviving Romanian troops before choosing to leave. The Dracula Battalion withdrew on November 15, 1914. Forty-six Romanian soldiers walked out of the Carpathian pass. The Moroi de munte stayed.
