Leonard Dinnerstein interview part 3 Conclusion of a 3 ½ hour interview (!) with Professor Dinnerstein. His comments here include: The Yiddish word “shvartze” in Jewish culture: “someone who cleans the furnace or cleans the house. The person you hire. A schvartze is not your Black friend, because you don’t have Black friends. Shvartze used to be the way they referred to the cleaning people who were Black. Again, pregnant with meaning. Never a neutral term. The implication is quite different than the literal translation. Shvartze was a Black person.” Shabbas Goy (Yiddish word): “A shabbas goy is someone who should not exist. The Orthodox were not to turn on lights or make fire of any kind [on Sabbath]. So you got a Gentile person who comes and turns the lights on and off, after dark on Fridays or on Saturday. Elvis Presley was a shabbas goy. He used too turn lights on and off when he was teenager at a synagogue near where he lived. It was a job. But there shouldn’t be a shabbas goy. My father said often ‘You never ask anybody to do what you would not do yourself.' So, the shabbas goy is a perversion. You are asking another person to sin by turning on the lights or turning off the lights.” “Do you have to repeat other peoples’ traditions if they are idiotic? Like this multicultural – I always thought it was a crock. You’re supposed to repeat other peoples’ cultures? I mean, if they beat the shit out of their wives, I’m to repeat them because in their culture that’s the way it is? Am I supposed to show respect for that? … The ultra-Orthodox? Totally crazy. I mean, I’m supposed to respect people who live the way their ancestors did 2,000-3,000 years ago? … I have no respect for them. I think they’re fools.” Professor Dinnerstein's response to this comment: Your kind of critique of, say, the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community – in another light – someone could say you’re being antisemitic: “They could say that. They could say anything they want to say. But I’m Jewish so I can say it … People within the group can criticize others in the in-group, but the people outside the in-group cannot." “Emotionally, I’m very glad there is Israel. Intellectually, there is no basis for Israel having been created. Am I pleased there is an Israel? Yes. Am I proud of the accomplishments of Israelis? Yes. Do I like the treatment that they make of the Arabs? No. Do I have respect for the Orthodox Jews there? No. What’s my opinion of Israel? How would you interpret that?” The accusation of Jewish self-hatred (and Noam Chomsky being accused of that): “Who are people to label other people negatively? Who’s right is that?” “I think Republicans are rich, crass, or stupid. My daughter says they’re not stupid, they’re ignorant. But she adds a fourth thing – she says Republicans are evil. It’s hard to argue with that.” Trouble Dinnerstein once had while giving a lecture at the Anti-Defamation League; “Political correctness” and “Jewish superiority”. Professor Dinnerstein never heard of the “U.S. Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism” in the State Department, but “it shows Jews have a lot of influence in Washington … Jews contribute 50% of the funds raised by the Democratic Party. No politician – Republican or Democrat – is going to oppose Jewish organizations and expect to get away with it. If Jewish organizations oppose you, you’re going to have a very hard time in Washington … What’s in it for any politician to oppose the Jews?” Political lobbyists/AIPAC (American-Israel Political Action Committee). Other Jewish organizations. Etc.
