UPDATE April 26, 2022: While progress continues to be made, some delays have pushed back the timeline for this project, which is now set to begin construction in 2023 and be wrapped up in 2026. ORIGINAL POST: State Route 510 is a two-lane highway that is often congested in the Yelm area during peak commute hours. Being the main street through Yelm, heavy traffic congestion has the potential to negatively affect emergency response times and economic vitality. This project intends to improve travel times for regional traffic, reduce the volume of regional traffic in downtown Yelm, help reduce the potential for collisions on Yelm Avenue and provide new non-motorized route for cyclists and pedestrians. Phase 2 is proposed to have a shared use path on one side of the proposed new section of highway. In this project, crews will build the 3 remaining miles of SR 510 between Cullens Road and 170th Street Southeast. The new connection, like the previously built Phase 1, is proposed to be a two-lane highway with bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Construction is scheduled to begin 2021 and completed in 2022.
