This presentation will mainly cover Jacques Rancière's book 'The Ignorant Schoolmaster' while touching on some of Rancière's political thought. The Ignorant Schoomaster is Rancière's response to the world of pedagogy. Rancière recounts the story of Joseph Jacotot, a 19th century schoolmaster who teaches his pupils how to apply their intelligence to the learning process, rather than enforce a master/student relationship of explication and stultification. Presentation slides - http://tinyurl.com/kcnj8yj This presentation talks about riots, both as they occur again and again throughout history, as well as a framework for understanding what riots are and how they transform into social changes and revolutions. From the French revolution in 1792, to the riots in LA in 1992, to the mass demonstrations in Egypt 2011, to the ongoing movement against police violence in the United States sparked by Ferguson, we must take a moment to look for lessons in moving forward. disclaimer The views of the speakers do not necessarily reflect the views of the Revolutionary Students Union as a whole. The RSU itself is non-tendency, but is firmly anti-capitalist. *Double Disclaimer* SDS does not endorse or reject any of the views and ideas put forward in this video.
