In May 1945, the red flag with the hammer and sickle flew over the Reichstag in Berlin, symbolizing the total defeat of the Third Reich. This emblematic image marked the end of an era in which once revered generals saw their power and prestige collapse in the space of a few months. As General Erich von Manstein so aptly put it, “War is a place of disaster, and we have failed on every front.” Indeed, between 1944 and 1945, the German military situation deteriorated at an alarming rate. The Red Army's victories in the east and the Allies' success in the Normandy landings inflicted devastating losses on German forces. The territories conquered shrank, and disorganization within the military commands became flagrant. The great generals, once respected strategists, found themselves facing an inescapable rout, struggling to understand how an empire that had dominated Europe could collapse so quickly. Battles multiplied, and the struggle for survival became the sole preoccupation of these officers.
