Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren discusses the developing emergency situation in Israel during this special briefing convened by The Jewish Agency for Israel. Oren is interviewed by Freda Surki-Baram (Chief Program Officer- North America, The Jewish Agency for Israel). He delves into many crucial aspects of the developing conflict between Hamas and the IDF; he analyzes its beginnings on the Temple Mount and in East Jerusalem and how the escalations started to get out of control. He also provides some historical perspective on the nature of this conflict, as opposed to what Israel endured in 1967. He then draws on his extensive knowledge of Gaza and Hamas to hypothesize about Hamas' motivations for initiating this conflagration, and what he thinks they hope to achieve on the global stage with their belligerence. Oren touches on the concept of "proportionality" and how the global news media plays right into the Hamas playbook, as well as on the notion that as the success of Iron Dome skews casualty numbers, it also skews world public opinion against Israel. Finally, in a very dramatic moment at the end of the interview, rockets begin raining down in the sky near Oren's home. He moves his camera over to show the Iron Dome intercepting most of them. Then, one actually lands and hits near his home. The transmission is truncated as Oren and his staff flee to safety. This is a ZOOM program that was sponsored by The Jewish Agency for Israel and was sent to JBS electronically.
