Leading Seaman Matt Harper on HMAS Melbourne
Royal Australia Navy frigate HMAS Melbourne is currently deployment to the Middle East as part of Operation SLIPPER, the Australian Defence Force contribution to the international campaign against terrorism. HMAS Melbourne commenced maritime security operations in the area on 24 September 2013 including support to the US-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) for the conduct maritime security operations in the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the waters around the Horn of Africa. CMF provides coordination to a 29-nation maritime force in order to defeat terrorism, prevent piracy, and encourage regional cooperation and ongoing maritime security. HMAS Melbourne is the 56th rotation of a Royal Australian Navy warship to the Middle East since the first Gulf War in 1990 and is the 32nd ship to deploy to the Middle East as part of Operation SLIPPER and CATALYST since September 2001.
