Day 2 | 1:30 PM–2:00 PM "Mathematical Modeling In Competitive Landscapes" Presented by: Charlie Cannold, University of Georgia, Athens GA USA Abstract: In today's competitive environment, there are countless opportunities to get first-hand experience in mathematical modeling competitions. Mathematical modeling provides the ability to predict outcomes and model complex situations, creating a unique opportunity to apply learned knowledge. This talk will describe my journey through modeling competitions, from top-place finishes globally to the techniques and mathematics involved, and analyze the software that helped make it possible. Using data gathered from previous competitions, we will analyze Monte Carlo simulations used in finance, SARIMA time series used in predictive modeling, and multivariate regressions used in predictive capabilities. We will also delve into more niche techniques, such as traffic modeling with software, association-rule algorithms used in advertising strategies, and heat map analysis for predicting housing growth. Building on these experiences, I will discuss real-world applications from my past internship experiences, which focused on data gathering, analysis, and presentation. I will discuss the plethora of online resources available and software that I have used throughout these competitions including MATLAB, Microsoft Excel, AnyLogic Pro 8, and Manim animation software. The talk will be a useful deep dive into many different modeling techniques and their applications, creating an environment for inexperienced and experienced competitors to learn.
