The Steamranger Heritage Railway is the longest preserved railway line in the country and a number of different historic train services operate over the line at different times of the year. The most popular service is the Cockle Train which runs from Goolwa to Victor Harbor and return on Wednesdays and Sundays all year round with additional days during school holidays. This video features English Electric diesel electric locomotive 507 hauling two centre loaders and a combined baggage/pass car between Goolwa and Victor Harbor with the first train for the day on Friday 8 October 2010. The journey begins with the departure from Goolwa passes through Middleton and Pt Elliot before running along the beach to Victor Harbor. At Victor Harbor the train pulls up just outside the station to allow the historic hand operated gates to be opened prior to entering the platform. These type of gates were once a common feature all over Australia.
