This is not a fancy shopping mall. This is not a big city street. This is rural China—and this is how we celebrate the Lunar New Year. Days before the holiday, villagers from nearby villages walk, ride bikes, or drive small trucks to the country market. The whole street turns red: lanterns, couplets, paper-cuttings, every color shouts “Happy New Year.” You can hear vendors calling, people laughing, kids running. The air smells like fried dough, roasted seeds, fresh meat, and sweet snacks. People buy food for the reunion dinner, new clothes for the family, and small gifts for relatives. Everything is cheap, fresh, and full of life. In the West, we often shop online or in quiet supermarkets. But here? It’s all about people, warmth, and tradition. This noisy, messy, happy crowd is the real taste of Chinese New Year.
