FACEBOOK: / cnf.caucasusnaturefund LINKEDIN: / caucasus-nature-fund INSTAGRAM: Meet Arman Mkrtchyan, who assumed the role of director at the 'Zangezur' Biosphere Complex in 2020. Tasked with overseeing the protection of 80,000 hectares of land, inhabited by a diverse community of humans, bears, leopards, and various endangered species. Arman sheds light on his passion for nature conservation in this role. Established in 2013, the 'Zangezur' Biosphere Complex combines Arevik National Park, Shikahogh State Reserve, and several nature sanctuaries into a unified protected area, rendering it one of the largest protected regions in the area. Within its 80,000 hectares, the sphere encompasses critical conservation zones that offer vital habitats for endangered species like the Caucasian Leopard, Bezoar goat, Armenian mouflon, and various other threatened wildlife. Within the park lies the Plane Grove Sanctuary, holding the largest expanse of natural oriental plane trees in the Caucasus region. This sanctuary is anchored by a collection of thousand years old trees lining the Tsav river. The Zangezur Sanctuary features sub-alpine meadows and meadow-steppe ecosystems that are indispensable habitats for the Armenian mouflon, a revered symbol of Armenia with ancient roots.
