How To Fix Engine Faults Code P0463 Code: Meaning, Causes, Symptoms And How To Fix. In this video tutorial I will show you how to fix engine faults code P0463 code. P0463 Meaning P0463 is an electrical fault code associated with the fuel level sensing mechanism. The error code pops up whenever the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a high input signal from the fuel level sensors (FLS). Here are the causes; A faulty FLS A faulty FLS sensor is one of the common causes of the P0463 error. These defects can stem from a faulty variable resistor, the float, or the arm. Regardless of the underlying defects, the unit will cause a P0463 if it relays higher voltages to the PCM. Faulty circuits A malfunctioning FLS-associated circuit, such as the unit getting ungrounded, can also be the source of the P0463. Corrosion at the sensor's terminals or any other point along the associated circuit can cause voltage surges, resulting in the error. A faulty PCM or Instrument Cluster Circuit Sometimes, the fault may not emanate from the sensor but from the PCM when interpreting the relayed signals. If this occurs, the voltage can be perceived as high, triggering the error. A malfunctioning of the instrument cluster circuit may also result in the error. P0463 Symptoms • Malfunctioning fuel gauge • Triggered “Check Engine” light • Unexpected fuel run-outs • Fluctuating fuel level How to fix the issue Inspect the FLS and its related wiring • Inspect the fuel tank to locate the FLS grounding strap on the tank. Clean the ground contact and redo it if it is badly corroded. • Assess the FLS circuit to check for loose connections and test for grounding with a multimeter. Repair the wiring if its resistance is very high. This indicates damage to the ground circuit. • Access the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. Replace the sensor if its resistance values deviate significantly from the required values on the owner’s manual. • Inspect the sensor for any visible damage and replace it if necessary. Check the PCM Use advanced scanning tools to check for instrument cluster circuits and PCM-related malfunctions that may cause the error code. This requires experienced personnel to detect and address the issue. Consult with a qualified technician if in doubt. If performing the checks yourself, ensure you are knowledgeable enough and have vehicle-specific diagrams before the repairs.
