In 1898 congress passed the Newlands Resolution illegally annexes Hawaiʻi—without a treaty or Native consent. The Hawaiian Organic Act enacted April 30, 1900, was an organic act enacted by the United States Congress to establish the Territory of Hawaii and to provide a Constitution and government for the territory. On June 14, 1900 the United States Admission Day ceremony took place in Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii. Territorial governors were appointed by the president of the United States with the advice and consent of the US Senate. In 1959 Hawai'i became a US state.
