Mourners laying wreaths and flowers STORYLINE: Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral on Wednesday of one of the six hostages whose body was recovered by the Israeli military in Gaza. Yagev Buchshtab, 35, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nirim on Oct. 7 along with his wife, Rimon Buchshtab-Kirsht. Rimon was released during a November ceasefire deal after 50 days in captivity. On Wednesday at the funeral his mother asked for forgiveness from her son. "In what world does a mother have to thank for the return of her son who was abandoned and murdered?" Esther Buchshtab said. "In what world do families have to beg and cry for the return of their family members alive and murdered." Buchshtab's grandmother and wife also laid flowers at his grave and cried. The military said in a statement Tuesday that its forces recovered Buchshtab's body along with those of five other hostages in an overnight operation in southern Gaza. It identified the other hostages as Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, and Haim Perry, without saying when or how they died. Buchshtab's and Dancyg's deaths had already been announced at the end of July, based on intelligence. Hamas is still believed to be holding around 110 hostages captured in the Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200. Israeli authorities estimate around a third of them are dead. The death toll from Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 40,000 Palestinians and has displaced the vast majority of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, often multiple times.
