If you place a coffin on a wooden platform inside a pit and cover it with soil until it is level with the ground, that is a grave. But with no marker, you worry descendants won't find their ancestors' resting place, so you pile a small mound of earth over it and erect a stone tablet that becomes a tomb. For commoners, the mound cannot rise higher than three feet, but as the sun of heaven, the higher you heap the earth, the greater it proclaims your supreme status. Soon you notice the mound is easily overgrown with plants or burrowed by animals, weakening its structure. Cleverly, you mix refined soil, fine sand, and lime to create Sanhet Yu, a strong composite earth. Layer by layer you compact it until no grass can grow, and the lime's pungent vapor even drives away birds. Then you wrap it with a seven-tier octagonal stone pagoda to withstand wind and rain. This you call the Lingtai. To outwit grave robbers, you purposely shift the burial chamber several meters away from the Lingtai, digging a slanted passage. Above it, you pile earth in the shape of a fish, while the entrance is hidden inside a sacrificial hall for emperors, a deliberate trick to mislead. Around the site, you build rammed earth walls, forming a double defense together with the outer city walls against both war and looting. Statues of ministers and generals line the sacred path, creating the scene of a royal court forever in attendance. This is the Western Xia Imperial Mausoleum, often called the Pyramids of the East.
