I started with a round pine table top, 24" in diameter, that I picked up from Home Depot. I actually picked up two 24" table tops, and 2 18" table tops to build several layouts. 2. I glued on a few layers of 1" thick foam insulation board. You can use a variety of adhesives, just make sure they are foam safe and don't eat through the foam. I also usually use some nails in the foam to help hold everything together. 3. I also glued together enough layers of foam to produce the mountain/tunnel portion of the layout. 4. The foam was then carved with a Stanley Surfoam tool like this one here: http://amzn.to/2m8nXpO which works great for carving foam. 5. I used light-weight spackle: http://amzn.to/2CRILMN to fill in any gaps and generally smooth out the scenery. 6. I then glued on some Woodland Scenics plaster rocks using hot glue in various locations. I mostly used these rock casting from Woodland Scenics: http://amzn.to/2CQm4Zj 7. The layout was painted with a tan/brown colored paint, any water based paint will work fine. 8. I used Kato Unitrack for the track, which was glued down using hot glue. I used 5 sections of 9.75" radius curves, two 8.5" radius curved pieces and two short ~1.5" straight sections along with one curved viaduct. I used a set of terminal rail joiners to supply power. I cut the plug off the end of the rail joiners so I could connect to a power supply. • 9.75" radius curves: http://amzn.to/2m7gWpk • 8.5" radius curves: http://amzn.to/2m7GlPL • 1.5" straight: http://amzn.to/2CHeTzD • curved viaduct: http://amzn.to/2CGXp67 • terminal rail joiners: http://amzn.to/2m6Atq7 9. The Kato Unitrack was ballasted with Scenic Express ballast. I don’t remember the exact kind I used, but the natural stone type ballast is a little easier to use than the Woodland Scenics ballast which is lightweight and tends to float away easier when you try to glue things down. I basically applied a layer of the ballast on both sides of the track with a little down the middle. After the ballast was in place I applied some rubbing alcohol and then a glued everything down with scenic cement: http://amzn.to/2CF7mRv. 10. Next came applying the scenery materials. I first painted everything with a layer of regular white glue. I pick this up in gallon jugs at Office Depot for a pretty reasonable cost. I then covered everything with a layer of Scenic Express dirt: https://goo.gl/BZWTGv, then a layer of burnt grass turf: http://amzn.to/2CHfeSV and then after applying more scenic cement, coated everything with static grass: http://amzn.to/2CFVzmj Static Grass applicator: http://amzn.to/2Fh4z2S 11. Along the river area I applied some talus and other small rocks: Fine Talus: http://amzn.to/2CO6FJh Medium Talus: http://amzn.to/2CUXNlb I used a variety of trees and clump foliage around the layout such as these: • JTT small wire trees/branches: http://amzn.to/2CTkBl0 (light green) • General trees: http://amzn.to/2DbpEv7 • Woodland Scenics clump foliage for shrubs: http://amzn.to/2CH2c7E I also painted a little glue on the tops of the static grass near the river area and sprinkled on some red and yellow ground foam to give the appearance of flowers. 12. For the river, I painted on multiple layers of Mod Podge: http://amzn.to/2FeO5Z6 to gradually build up the water. For a flat river I would use envirotex, but since the river was sloped on this layout, something that doesn’t tend to run off was needed. For the waterfall, I used Woodland Scenics Water Effects: http://amzn.to/2CGY1IX I used some additional water effects to attach the waterfall and blend it into the river at the top and bottom. 13. The edges of the layout were painted black, since I prefer that, but some people prefer a greenish or other more neutral color.
