Over the years, many pedal manufacturers have tried to replicate the fabled Echoplex EP-3 Preamp - the circuit utilised by a certain Jimmy Page, amongst many others - in pedal format, and there's now a whole host of them on the market. But of those offerings, two names repeatedly seem to rise to the top as being THE most accurate. Enter Chase Tone of the USA, and Clinch FX of Australia. Both of these companies have replicated that legendary circuit down to the finest detail....the internal 23V operating voltage; the TIS58 JFET transistor (or a modern equivalent of, at least, in the case of Peter Clinch); the 'folding in' effect at the top of the volume pot's travel that flattens the EQ more than it does add any extra boost. These are the two that you want. But whilst there are a few differences between them on paper - from Through Hole vs. SMD construction to how they want to be powered - when all is said and done, how different do the SOUND? Much has been said on forums over the years (The Gear Page, I'm looking at you...!) but in the real world, why would you choose one over the other? Today, after years of speculation, we're finally going to find out. I'll be making this the fairest test I possibly can...giving them each the power they need to run at 'real' Echoplex voltage internally and keeping the entire rig exactly the same (down to the cable runs, amp settings, mic blend, etc) to finally answer the question: how do these two behemoths of the EP-3 Preamp concept compare? What do you think? Which did you prefer? Any major differences to you? Comment below!
