Why Leaves are Garden Gold: A Guide to Using Leaves in Your Garden Hi, I’m Lisa Mason Ziegler, and I love using leaves in my garden. December is the perfect time to gather them; while many throw them away, we see them as treasures! I use leaves primarily as mulch. After collecting what I need for pathways, I create leaf mold cages with livestock panels, filling them with leaves. Shredding isn’t necessary, though it speeds up composting. These cages compress over winter, providing rich leaf mold for future use. I place them in shady spots, so they don’t disrupt the garden’s appearance. Applying leaves to pathways blocks light, preventing weed seeds from germinating. While I don’t typically use leaves in flower beds due to the risk of suffocating plants, smaller leaves are an exception. Using leaves is simple! We open bags with a sod knife and dump them where needed, making it easier than using other mulches. As we walk on the pathways, we break down the leaves, enriching the soil. We consider leaves garden gold for their essential role in improving soil health. So, next time you see bags of leaves, remember they could be valuable for your garden!
