Education Reform in Odisha: Class 5 & 8 to Face Evaluated Exams

In a significant move, the School and Mass Education Department in Odisha has announced that annual examinations for students of Class 5 and Class 8 will now be formally evaluated. The department has issued new guidelines for the smooth conduct and management of these examinations. Under the new system, question papers will be printed at the district level and stored under strict security. They will be delivered to schools on the morning of the examination day. For Class 5 students, the annual evaluation will consist of a 50-mark exam, divided into 10 marks for an oral test and 40 marks for a written examination. Class 8 students will face a 50-mark written examination only. Students who do not pass these annual exams will be provided an opportunity to appear for a supplementary examination. To ensure meticulous oversight and proper implementation, a three-tier steering committee has been formed. This committee will be headed by the Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department at the state level, a district-level management committee chaired by the Collector (District Magistrate), and a block-level committee chaired by the Block Education Officer.
