Noah and I took a stroll around Bay Lough, followed by a hike to the summit of Knockmealdown Mountain which at 794m is the highest point in Waterford. The walk to the lake is less than a kilometre from the car park and is a pretty easy walk. Very manageable for a family stroll and extremely scenic so well worth a visit. The hike to the summit via Sugarloaf hill is much more demanding with steep sections on rough trails with loose rock etc. It is also entirely on open mountain terrain so ensuring that you have the correct gear and equipment with you is essential. The weather can change very quickly on the hills so extra layers of clothes, raingear, plenty of water and enough food to sustain everyone on the hike. Most importantly, is a map and compass, ideally and the ability to use them. Failing that you should have some way to safely navigate your way off the mountain if the weather does close in.
