KiwiRail's GE-built DX locomotives ~ originally classed as the GE U26C ~ have been in service since 1972, and have seen many upgrades over the years, to the point where there are now three subclasses; DXB, DXC and DXR. Because of all the modifications, none of the class is still running in their original condition. This video is a compilation of most of the DX footage I've captured over the years, including the classic chugging sound from their GE 7FDL-12 prime movers. Highlights include DXC 5419 in Hawkes Bay, DXB 5016 on the turntable in Mount Maunganui and DXC 5454 in Wellington after her EFi conversion. For whatever reason I used to think that DXs sounded like the British Rail Class 37, which makes no sense as the Class 37s use English Electric engines. These days the entire class, apart from the long-scrapped DX 2639 and withdrawn DXC 5500, are still in service. Or rather, the entire class is still on KiwiRail's roster; DXCs 5391 and 5039 are currently in Hutt Workshops for overhaul and upgrading with Electronic Fuel Injection (efi) prime movers. They used to be a common sight in the North Island, but all have since been transferred south following the arrival of the newer DL class locomotives.
