WINDVOGEL | Energy-Generating Kites by Studio Roosegaarde [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

WINDVOGEL is an energy-generating system developed by Studio Roosegaarde, led by Daan Roosegaarde. The project explores how wind, technology, and landscape can combine to produce renewable energy while creating a poetic public experience. WINDVOGEL consists of smart kites that move freely in the wind, connected by a cable to a ground-based generator. As the kites rise and shift through the air, the push and pull of the cable is converted into electricity, similar to the working principle of a bicycle dynamo. The system can generate up to 100 kilowatts of power, supplying renewable energy for approximately 200 households. The project is a tribute to the late Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels, whose vision of airborne wind energy inspired its development. WINDVOGEL was realized in collaboration with a technology spin-off from TU Delft and is complemented by a specially designed glowing fiber line that visualizes the movement of energy in the sky. While in flight, WINDVOGEL creates a visual symphony of illuminated lines, celebrating the beauty and poetry of green energy. The work makes renewable energy visible and experiential, connecting engineering performance with cultural meaning. WINDVOGEL premiered in the Netherlands as part of ICOON Afsluitdijk, a government-commissioned initiative to enhance the innovative character of the 32-kilometer Afsluitdijk. The program positions the iconic dike as a model landscape integrating water protection, heritage, energy, and mobility. WINDVOGEL is currently presented internationally.
