After finishing the Four Heavenly Kings, it felt right to pay homage to the legendary female vocalists of the ’80s and ’90s. This song sits at the very top of that era—so iconic that it exists in two versions with completely different lyrics. Of course, I’m talking about 《夕陽之歌》 by 梅艷芳 (Anita Mui) and 《千千闋歌》by 陈慧娴 (Priscilla Chan). I grew up listening to 《千千闋歌》, so that version is the one I’m most familiar with. But after revisiting both—especially in light of how iconic Anita Mui was, and how deeply 《夕陽之歌》 reflects her dignity, strength, and struggle—I knew this was the version I had to choose. This is admittedly the more difficult of the two to interpret; and because this song is such hallowed ground, I tried to stay as close to the original meaning and spirit as possible. This time, I’ve also included the original Cantonese lyrics in the video so you can follow along. Leave a comment below if you like this format and I will continue to include Chinese lyrics on screen going forward (does anyone actually read these descriptions though? haha..) What’s especially fascinating about this song is the tension between the triumphant melody of the chorus and the sadness of the lyrics. It may reflect the singer’s conflicted feelings—caught between resolve and dignity. More likely, it traces back to the original Japanese version, 《夕焼けの歌》, which is emotionally lighter. Because of that, the melody itself never sinks into the same depth of heartbreak found in the Chinese versions.
