Long...video...There are chapters marked out. It was originally going to be 3-4 parts but with chapters it doesn't really matter. This NEC NP-PE401H (not the W) was sent to me from a tech who maintains video games for a bar/restaurant type place. It was used in a Star Wars Battle Pod game, projecting onto a curved screen. That is why it has the weird short throw lens adapter setup and is mounted to a tray. I believe the entire game was purchased used or maybe just the projector? Either way the projector had a myriad of issues. The initial problem reported was an intermittent fan lock warning and possibly a bad color wheel. I know these run for long hours and possibly even days at a time. There was a layer of weird black dust and "soot" all over the inside. A lot of is probably came from the foam that dried out but not all of it. This projector ran a hard life before it got to me. I initially expected this to be a pretty straightforward job. Clean, new color wheel, reset the timer and test. Then send it. That is not what happened at all. During testing with a movie it started to give fan errors. This was one of the customers complaints. What started out pretty simple turned into a journey that lasted almost 3 months. The projector was so worn that multiple parts were unreliable and failing intermittently. None of the problems showed up all at once. That said, the longer it ran, the faster the problems appears. The lack of a service manual was really detrimental to my ability to troubleshoot. This model is a weird off-model. Very hard to find used. I was trying to apply the information I have learned from working on other projectors to this one and it let me down in a few places. A service manual would have answered the questions that I used educated guesses on and would have prevented some wild goose chases and prevented some self-created issues. There was a lot of other work that I just had to do off camera. This customer had to have this working one way or the other and the chances of finding a used projector has been zero. It took a while but I did prevail in the end. I ended up finally landing on a problematic mainboard, color wheel and some bad fans. There was also a problem with obtaining the proper firmware. Since this is used in a video game, it's not really supported by anyone. NEC will sell me parts but they had no info on the updated firmware. This is one of the many potential pitfalls of repair. Especially for a niche product in an already niche industry. While editing this, I was cringing at how much a service manual would have helped me throughout. So many theories and suspicions that ended up being dead ends. I did learn a lot, so that's good but time=money in this case. It was kind of an expensive lesson as there was no way I could have charged "true" labor time... Thankfully I was successful in the end and the projector has been running back in its video game for a little while now(as of posting this video). If you happen to have a copy of this Service Manual or know who has one, please let me know. Again, it is for an NEC NP-PE401H. There is a 401W but it is an LCD model rather than DLP.
