5 Facts About FASD and Foster Care

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a blanket term for the many conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND), Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD), Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE), Fetal Alcohol Effect (FAE), or some combination of any or all of the above. FASD is the leading cause of developmental disabilities in the Western World. Sadly, children in foster care or who are domestically adopted have a higher rate of FASD than the average population. According to some estimates, approximately 80% of kids and teens in the foster care system are affected by an FASD. For this reason, it is important that foster parents be informed and educated about the signs and symptoms of FASD and have some direction on where to go if you suspect a child in your care suffers from FASD.
