The Barracks at Chaffee: where history and future collide. Camp Chaffee was created to serve our nation as part of the Arsenal of Democracy. Historically Camp Chaffee trained and deployed three Armored Divisions during World War 2 and was home to another after the war. The base also housed German prisoners of war. Later re-designated as Fort Chaffee the Fort served as the U.S. Army’s School of Artillery and as the Joint Readiness Training Center. Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army here and country music legend Charlie Pride received his basic training here. Also thousands of refugees were housed here in humanitarian missions. In 1995 the government released 7,000 acres of military properties from Fort Chaffee back to the state and surrounding cities for redevelopment. For years most of the buildings were left abandoned and areas undeveloped. Recently a new vision has emerged and life is returning to these historic grounds. The Barracks at Chaffee seeks to serve our community with a vision to restore and revive these forgotten historic buildings. We envision a thriving commercial, residential and entertainment destination and a plan to preserve our history by telling the Fort Chaffee story along our Veterans Tribute Trail throughout our outdoor shopping district. We see a community of loft apartments, retail shops, restaurants, salons and breweries. We see entertainment venues, bike trails, parks and community events. We see The Barracks at Chaffee as a local, regional and national destination. We see our history and our future merge in a resort-style laid-back atmosphere all within the Chaffee entertainment district. We are proud to be part of the exciting Chaffee Crossing neighborhood which includes Arkansas Colleges of Heath Education, TGE Spark Studios planned Movie Production Studios, PEAK innovation Center, ArcBest, and multiple other businesses along with 41 residential neighborhoods with 4000+ housing units. The Eastside of Fort Smith is booming. The Barracks at Chaffee is humble and excited to be a part of it all. Nearby Fort Chaffee continues to serve our national security interests as an active military post. We love our service members and veterans and are proud to serve their legacy as they continue the mission. The Barracks at Chaffee is here to serve our community and preserve our history.
