Known as one of the quintessential AOR tenors, Lou Gramm's powerful voice was an essential element of Foreigner. Gramm was renowned for his consistency and energy as a live performer and sang with amazing, raw power (similarly to Robert Plant but with his own, unique soul influence) until his voice noticeably changed due to a brain tumour. In his prime Gramm was an unstoppable force of pure vocal talent and emotion. (Dortmund, 1981) 3. 0:41 - A big sustained B4 from "Blinded by Science". 4. 0:52 - Relaxed singing centered around tenor high C (C5) from "Hangin' on My Hip". 5. 1:14 - Immense D5s from "Juke Box Hero", one of Lou's finest and most technically impressive moments as a singer. 6. 1:28 - D5s from "The Beat of My Heart". 7. 1:43 - A sustained D5 from "Time". 8. 1:54 - B4s and D5s from "Blue Morning, Blue Day". 9. 2:03 - The vibrant finale from "Tin Soldier": tops at D5. 10. 2:18 - Seamless E♭5s from "I'll Come Running". 11. 2:27 - A sustained E♭5 from "Boy". 12. 2:41 - A similar note from "Angel with a Dirty Face": incredible! 13. 2:56 - Very passionate, amazing singing from "With Heaven on Our Side": C♯5s and E♭5s. 14. 3:11 - A very clear E♭5 from "Break It Up". 15. 3:24 - A primal scream - D5-to-E5 - from "Soul Doctor". 16. 3:31 - E5s during the fade-out of "Heart Turns to Stone"... Sadly buried quite under. 17. 3:39 - The spectacular E5 from "Prisoner of Love", also sung during the fade-out. 18. 3:51 - Gramm channels Plant: the classic A4-C5-E5 high note challenge from the "Black Dog" cover with Zakk Wylde. Gramm also does justice to "Stairway to Heaven" on the same album! 19. 4:20 - A gradual climb up to a huge screamed E5 from "Dirty White Boy" live. (Dortmund/Wushan, 1984) 20. 4:35 - Melody E5s from "Can't Wait". 21. 5:00 - Intense E5-to-F5 from "I'm Gonna Win". 22. 5:15 - Magnificent singing from "I Want You": a variety of E5s and F5s sung in different ways, very impressive. Great song! 23. 5:47 - The classic F5 from "Waiting for a Girl Like You". 24. 6:03 - The same thing done live even better! (Classic Hits Live/Best of Live album version) 25. 6:20 - Powerful F5s from "Heartache"; even around an area so high up, Gramm's tonal quality doesn't decrease even slightly. 26. 6:31 - A F♯5 from "Rev on the Red Line". 27. 6:46 - Another classic note, the F♯5 (and the F5 that soon follows it) from "I Want to Know What Love Is". 28. 7:04 - Nails it live! (Rock am Ring, 1985) 29. 7:16 - Two amazing segments from "Juke Box Hero": first some powerful wailing around E5, then the glorious G5 from the finale. 30. 7:35 - Once again, nails it live! (Deer Creek, 1993) 31. 7:46 - A soft falsetto A5 from "Night Life". 32. 7:52 - Mid range - A tasteful example of Lou's softer singing from "I Want to Know What Love Is": great, bluesy tone. 33. 8:17 - Lower range - C3s from a more recent tuned-down live performance of "Waiting for a Girl Like You", probably around the beginning of the 2000's. The vocal damage is rather apparent here, and Gramm's voice sounds deeper and weaker here (Venue and exact date unknown). Gramm underwent a surgery earlier to remove a brain tumor which directly affected his vocal and performing abilities. As a result, he found himself greatly struggling to sing the past Foreigner hits, but has since started to show some signs of potential recovery. 34. 8:26 - B2s from "I Keep Hoping". 35. 8:53 - Rockabilly-tingled singing from "Women" with a couple of B2s. 36. 9:12- Soft G♯2s from "With Heaven on Our Side". Also nails these live! 37. 9:35 - Anacrusis A2s and a G2 from the acoustic version of "Juke Box Hero", sung much lower than the original. (Nearly Unplugged, 1999) 38. 9:59 - F2s from the rare b-side "Rising Suspicion". (featuring Ann Wilson) 39. 10:13 - A big surprise, the menacing vocals from "Big Dog": lots of low growling and snarling. The voice trails down to G1-B1 a plenty of times in a growly vocal style.
