Biological systems can be complex and unintuitive with many different interacting processes. Understanding such complexity can be challenging, and biologists are increasingly working with researchers from other disciplines to understand their experimental observations. With a background in Mathematics, here Dr Leah Band describes how developing mathematical models can help us to understand biological systems, specifically how different types of model are helping us to understand how plants grow. Split between the Schools of Biosciences and Mathematical Sciences, Leah develops mathematical models that investigate how hormones control plant growth. "Although I always enjoyed biology at school, my natural ability at maths drew me to maths-based A-levels and then a mathematics degree at the University of Warwick. As an undergraduate, I realised that I wanted to use maths to understand the world around us, and was inspired by several courses on mathematical biology to pursue a PhD. I moved to the University of Nottingham to study for a PhD modelling Atherosclerotic plaque growth. After my PhD, I joined the CPIB, where I enjoyed working with researchers from many different disciplines, initially as a postdoc and now as a group leader.
