Genesis 43 continues our series through the book of Genesis. The famine Joseph foretold presses hard on the land, and Jacob can no longer refuse to send Benjamin to Egypt. Judah pledges himself as a guarantee for his brother’s safety, and Jacob entrusts Benjamin into the hands of God Almighty. When the brothers return to Egypt, Joseph receives them into his house. Their fears rise as they recall their guilt, yet they are met with unexpected hospitality. At the meal, Joseph arranges them by birth order and gives Benjamin five times the portion, recreating the same conditions that once exposed their envy. In this chapter Jacob moves from refusal to surrender, Judah offers himself as a substitute, and the brothers confess openly instead of concealing.
