(31 Dec 2020) Two protesters were killed in clashes with police in Peru on Tuesday during a farmers' protest against the new agrarian law. One of the deceased was a 16-year-old minor, according to the National Ombudsman's Office Four other demonstrators and six police officers were injured. Farmworkers protests began in early December with a dead protester in the southern region of Ica. The first protests led to the repeal of an old agricultural law, and the promise by Congress of a new one, which passed on Tuesday, but has also resulted in demonstrations. Under the new law, workers will earn $13.4 (US dollars) a day. This new law was also not well received by the powerful agricultural business sector, who claim that the increase will affect some 2,000 companies and some 200,000 (two hundred thousand) jobs. There are some 300,000 agricultural workers in Peru, and the country is the world's leading exporter of blueberries. Agro-exports send more than three billion dollars a year in fruit and vegetables to markets in Europe, the United States and China.
