This year brought a record run of sockeye salmon to Alaska’s Kenai River—and I was there with a dip net in hand. Every summer, Alaskans head to the mouth of the river to harvest wild salmon that will feed their families for the year ahead. It’s called dip netting, and as a resident, I’m allowed to catch and keep 45 sockeye salmon for my family. With millions of fish charging upstream, I spent the day standing waist-deep in the cold surf, netting salmon one after another. Once my limit was reached, I filleted every single fish right there on the beach—hard work, but so worth it.
