About Biska Jatra: Biska Jatra is an ancient and vibrant festival celebrated in Bhaktapur, Nepal, during the Nepali New Year, usually in mid-April. Unlike most New Year festivals, Biska Jatra is not linked to any lunar calendar but is rooted in local legends and traditions. The most iconic event of the festival is the massive tug-of-war between the upper and lower parts of Bhaktapur city, where a towering chariot carrying the wrathful deity Bhairab is pulled through narrow streets. This intense contest symbolizes the struggle between good and evil, and whichever side wins is believed to be blessed for the year. Another key highlight is the erection of a huge wooden pole called the "Yosin" or "Linga" at Lyasinkhel. The pole is raised with much effort and fanfare, and its fall marks the end of the festival. Biska Jatra is more than just a celebration; it’s a showcase of Bhaktapur’s cultural pride, unity, and centuries-old traditions. Crowds gather to dance, play traditional instruments, offer prayers, and share food with family and friends.
