Inmates at Sierra Chica prison - where the riots began this weekend - are still holding 20 hostages. Negotiations with officials are said to have reached a stalemate. Prison uprisings are common in Argentina, where many jails are over-crowded and under-funded. The standoff continues for another day at the Penal de Olmos near the city of La Plata - the inmates are out on the roof and refuse to come down until their demands are met. The prison riots in Argentina have now spread to at least eight jails - over 6,000 inmates are demanding better living conditions and faster treatment of their cases in court. Relatives gathered outside the prison walls, waiting anxiously for news from the authorities. Some managed to stay cheerful, shouting words of support for the inmates - while others were quickly beginning to despair. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Translation: We don't know anything - now they tell us they're going to let us visit for five minutes, ten minutes - yesterday they said they'd let us in and then they didn't allow us to go in at all. SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop - relative of one of the inmates. The riots broke out at Sierra Chica prison over the weekend where inmates are holding 20 hostages. Negotiations with officials are reported to have reached a stalemate. Almost simultaneously, other revolts began at the provincial prisons of Olmos, Azul and La Plata, where a total of 10 hostages were taken, all of them prison guards. The uprisings spread to the prisons of Mercedes, Dolores and Ezeiza, Tuesday, while inmates went on hunger strikes at Junin, Bahia Blanca and Los Hornos. Prison uprisings are common in Argentina, where many jails are over-crowded and under-funded. So far this year, there have been seven uprisings across the country. This latest spate of riots however looks as if it could be the worst.
