Helicobacter pylori infections can be diagnosed by invasive tests and non invasive tests. Non invasive tests means there is no introduction of any instrument through the mouth. The common non invasive tests done are urea breath tests. It can be C13 or C14 urea breath tests by which you measure the urea , carbon dioxide with labelled urea, after consuming a urea capsule this is a very sensitive and specific test for H. pylori. The other non invasive test are the stool antigen tests and the antibody tests. The antibody tests are of no use because it doesn’t predict the presence of active infection and if positive can denote present infection or past infection. The invasive tests are endoscopy related test. It can be during endoscopy we can take a tissue from the stomach or a biopsy from the stomach and test it for H.pylori. You can have a rapid way of testing called as rapid urease test or you can even culture this test for H. plylori. These are the common methods of diagnosis of H.pylori.
