Guests: Dr. Deborah Bolnick, Dr. Raquel Fleskes, and Samantha Archer of the Genetics Lab in the Department of Anthropology, University of Connecticut DNA research is a fairly recent addition to archaeological methods. The basics of ancient DNA research in archaeology, including an explanation of the technique, which archaeological materials ancient DNA can be extracted from, and what ancient DNA can and can't tell us, are discussed. The guests also speak about the ethics of DNA work, including extraction techniques, cognizance about past racist uses of physical anthropology, and especially the importance of listening and being accountable to the communities from whose remains ancient DNA is extracted. New co-host and newly elected President of the Friends of the Office of State Archaeology, Glenda Rose, is also introduced.
