Why Do My Ears Hurt While Doing HBOT?

Is ear pain in the hyperbaric chamber normal? While this is a common issue that happens when a patient is having difficulty “clearing their ears” (equalize the pressure in their ears), it’s not normal. Patients should not experience pain in a hyperbaric chamber. If you or the patient is having pain while in the hyperbaric chamber, that is an absolute signal that something is not going well at that moment, and it’s the technician's job to do something right away. The most common type of injury inside of a chamber is middle ear barotrauma. And when that happens, it's almost always a result of us not coaching a patient on all the different ways to clear their ears. Any pain inside the chamber means that you have to stop the travel of that chamber, immediately assess the issue, and make a decision to resolve the issue or end the session. There are plenty of other things that could happen inside of the hyperbaric chamber. This video only covers middle ear barotrauma because it's the most common issue.
