For some newborn babies, especially those born early or with medical complications, the first feeding after delivery may be given *through a tube* instead of by breast or bottle. This is called *tube feeding* or **gavage feeding**. Why a tube is used A feeding tube may be needed if the baby: Is *premature* and cannot coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing Has *breathing difficulties* Is very weak or has low birth weight Has certain medical or surgical conditions How the tube feeding works A thin, soft tube is gently passed through the baby’s *nose or mouth* into the stomach. Breast milk (preferred) or formula is slowly given through the tube using a syringe or pump. The baby does not need to suck — the milk goes directly into the stomach. Types of tube feeding *Orogastric tube (OG tube)* – through the mouth *Nasogastric tube (NG tube)* – through the nose Is it safe? Yes. In hospital settings (especially in the NICU), it is a common and safe method when monitored by trained healthcare staff. Doctors and nurses: Check tube placement carefully Monitor the baby’s breathing and heart rate Watch for feeding tolerance (vomiting, bloating, discomfort) When can baby start normal feeding? As the baby becomes stronger and can safely suck and swallow, they are gradually transitioned to: Breastfeeding Bottle feeding If you’d like, I can also explain: How much milk is given in the first feeding Signs of feeding intolerance How parents can help during tube feeding 🤍
