First, let's talk about the history of potatoes in the paleo diet. Typically because potatoes were part of the neolithic age, they aren't a paleo food because they wouldn't have been around when our paleo ancestors were digging up food. However, if they would have been around, my guess is heck yes they would have dug them up and ate the crap out of them, just like they would have cut the head off a grass-fed cow and ate that beef if they could have back then. So technically, no. Potatoes aren't a paleo food. But a lot of experts have now changed their opinion of that, and I am one to always include potatoes as part of a paleo plan. I mean, now people are talking about dark chocolate and coconut oil, and they make these paleo desserts that have processed stuff in it. So I don't know why in the world people would demonize potatoes being on a paleo diet. Now, a couple things about potatoes and whether or not they fit in your diet plan. Number one, do you exercise intensely? If you're an anaerobic exerciser, if you train with weights intensely and you do any type of high intensity exercise-- which I highly recommend that you do-- then potatoes are the perfect anaerobic fuel for you to consume in the post-workout window with protein. Now, a lot of other people will talk about potatoes if you're sedentary. If you're sedentary, I recommend that you avoid potatoes most of the time. And then maybe once or twice a week, have a high carb meal that maybe includes potatoes or another healthy glucose based starch, believe it or not, like white rice. Because once a week if you do this and you're following a low carb plan the other six days of the week, this will help reboot your metabolism a little bit.
