SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Daniel Ortega, Nicaraguan President: "We come from a country devout to the Virgin Mary, from a Christian country that honours the Virgin of Guadalupe. We made a commitment during the electoral campaign, that after the elections we would come here and stand up in front of the Virgin, that once we visit Mexico, the first stop was to see the Virgin. For what reason? To thank her for the opportunity she's giving to Nicaraguans so we can fight to eradicate poverty, so the people of Nicaragua can be more dignified." 11. Low shot of Ortega listening to priest STORYLINE: The President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega arrived in Mexico on Wednesday for a two day visit. Before meeting with Mexico's president Felipe Calderon, Ortega paid a visit the Catholic shrine, the Basilica de Guadalupe, as he had promised during his election campaign. "We made a commitment during the electoral campaign, that after the elections we would come here and stand up in front of the Virgin, that once we visit Mexico, the first stop was to see the Virgin. For what reason? To thank her for the opportunity she's giving to Nicaraguans so we can fight to eradicate poverty," he said. According to Ortega, the improvement of Mexico's relations with two anti-US states, Cuba and Venezuela, will be on the agenda when he meets Calderon. Ortega, a former Marxist revolutionary who fought a 10-year war with the U.S.-backed Contra rebels, left the country in economic chaos after his electoral defeat in 1990.
