Jo wasn’t always a fan of plants, but she is a businesswoman and saw an opportunity to make money. During the pandemic, she saw a pink plant and wanted it but wasn’t able to get it, so she had to keep searching for it, which led her into the world of plants, propagation, and realizing she could become a plant reseller. She will share some tips on how she runs her plant-flipping business. How Did You Get Started In Plant Flipping? During COVID, Jo was running her ice cream shop, and Facebook ads for a local place selling plants came up. She saw a pink and white plant and wanted it. When she went to get it, she couldn't and was shocked to learn there was competition for plants. That took her to meet someone who sells plants out of their garage. It was $20 more than online, and she still bought the plant because she wanted it. From there, Jo started finding all the different plant Facebook groups and dove into the world of plants. She stayed quiet for a while and found a black plant called a ZZ Raven, the first plant she sold. Were You Into Plants Before? Jo says she was interested in the ability to grow food. She had purchased a cherry tree, but it died, and then she tried tomatoes, but they were too small. She always wanted the ability to grow things, but it wasn’t natural. How Do You Learn About Plants? Jo says she’s killed a couple of plants while dissecting them to learn how they work. When she first took the ZZ Raven out of its pot, it had potato-looking roots that she had never seen before. She took to YouTube and Google to learn. The Facebook groups also gave her some info because people would ask about nodes, and then she would look up what nodes were. Where Did You Start Selling Them? Where’s The Market For Plants? Jo’s first sale was on Facebook, a nationwide sale from a group called Plant Purge USA. She’d been in the group for three months, took a good picture, posted it, and then wrapped the plants like holiday gifts when they sold. She had no idea how they would travel or if they would do well. This plant was from a little tub that was $10 at Walmart. She bought the plant and separated it into ten different pieces. The biggest expense was the wrapping she used to ship. Once it sold, she bought the rest of the plants to split them off and sell. Some states, like Minnesota or New York, don’t have the same plants, so there was a market. What Is The Most You’ve Sold A Plant For? Jo says she made almost $200 for selling one leaf with a node. The profit depends on what you spend on the plant. There are $10 stock plants or plants that cost $500. And then you choose whether to cut it, make money off it, grow it and make more money. How Do You Learn Which Plants To Cut? There is a learning curve. Jo goes to Pinterest to learn where to cut leaves. She learned a lot about propagation, where you take a cutting and root it to produce a new plant. How Does The Shipping Process Work? Jo said she lost a couple of plants when she first started, but not as many as she anticipated because she was using hardy plants. The leaves are hard, and the root is like a potato. The biggest thing is always to protect the root. Some of them she ships in a box with poly-fil stuffing, so there’s no movement. For some, she may put a harder surface around the leaves. Sometimes plants will root in transit. Some plants need a wet paper towel with them. It all depends on the plant. You want to be careful with the water because plants can get root rot if they’re in transit for too long. Where Are You Sourcing? Jo says she sources at Walmart stores. She’s built relationships with the employees there, so they will give her a heads-up when they have new plants. There’s also a company called Costa Farms, known for bringing exotic plants to the U.S. in limited-release editions at Walmart. How Much Do You Make Per Month Selling Plants? Jo says the money depends on her effort. She made $600 in a couple of hours at her last sale by selling what she propagated at her house. It’s just a hobby for her, so she can work more sometimes and less other times. Once she did a plant purge where she put all of her plants in an online sale, and she made approximately $2,000.
