A video has emerged of municipal workers in Durban using heavy plant machinery to deliberately damage the road as Metro Police and SAPS members look on. Workers from the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Department went on strike on Tuesday. A large group of workers arrived with trucks loaded with plant machinery that was then used to block Electron Road outside the municipality’s Springfield Park offices. eThekwini Metro Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, told News24 that the strike was over pay structures within the municipality. "The shop steward met with management and the road was opened soon after the meeting concluded," Sewpersad said. Pressed about the seeming lack of action by the Metro Police officials seen in the video, Sewpersad admitted that the scene might look confusing to members of the public. "We take our cue from the SAPS members at the scene. They give the instructions as they take the lead - be it private or municipal property that is being damaged," the senior superintendent explained. According to the Metro Police, the damage to the road appeared to be minimal but city engineers were still to formally make an assessment at the time of speaking to News24.
